Joan L. Phillips Fine Art

I believe that the process of creating is just as important, if not more important, then the end product. My creative process includes experimention with various mediums and combining those mediums.

My photographs are part of the snapshot esthetic with a creative flare. They are no more the 8x10 inches in size. My images read like a diary and represent my memories of a moment, object or space. I use an Olympus Digital SLR, Olympus Point and Shoot camera and various plastic toy cameras. I am influenced most by Jeff Brouws, Stephen Shore, and William Eggleston. I look to photograph interesting angles, odd details, and colors. I photograph subjects that many people just walk by such as abanoned buildings, window reflections, found still lifes, etc.

My mixed media work is based on abstract elements from my photographs. My work includes encaustic paintings, monotype printing, pen and ink sketches, collage, and book making.

I have a photojournalistic style to my weddings and portraits. I enjoy non-traditional event photography and shoot many candids. I find that I get the best and most real expressions when I shoot in this fashion. This does not mean that I do not create the tradtional photographs of a wedding or portrait; its about finding the right balance for both styles.
